Achievements
Successfully organized and hosted the Regional World Fisheries Day in 2008, an event that brought 310 participants from the East African partner states to advocate for proper management of fishery resources surrounding Lake Victoria. This resulted in clarification of the legal taxes that were levied on fisher men, boat owners; elimination of mounting illegal revenue collection roadblocks. The outcome of this is improved working relations between the fishing community and government; hence increase in the district revenue from the fishers. The meeting also resolved to institute a fishing ban of three (3) months allow for fish growth and availability in the lake. The outcome of the ban was reasonable fish size of 5 inch was realized, which boosted the income of the fishing community, hence improved livelihood. Built capacity of CSOs in Kalangala to localize the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) at lower levels so as to be perceived among the communities. This helped CSOs in Kalangala District to benefit from the Kalangala District Development Programme (KDDP) CSOs Small Grant facility.
Through the initiation of a number of projects KADINGO has improved communities’ welfare such as environment project for empowerment of CSOs Leadership for Community involvement and participation in Decision making in Kalangala, Civil Society networking & capacity building, Women & Children Rights Advocacy project, and the Mwananchi governance project as well linking with other sister projects in other parts of the country under different programmes, KADINGO’s annual financial budget and income have grown from below 25 million Uganda Shillings in 2008 to over 250million Uganda Shillings for the year 2011.
Developed monitoring log for the ongoing, ‘Mwananchi’ Organization Development Initiative (ODI’s), Governance and Transparency Fund Project funded by Development Research and Training (DRT). The tool has helped the Community Health Monitors to collect and have up to date data concerning maternal health services in Bujumba Sub County, which is now a basis for engagement with government, media, elected representatives, Traditional leaders, donors and other services providers on key maternal health services.
